Sarieva Gallery is pleased to present the solo show of Munich-based Bulgarian artist Valyo Tchenkov. The exhibition features a selection of the newest paintings by the painter, along with works from the 2017 – 2021 period.
„Soma“ is the daily dose of the substance, which Aldous Huxley described in his dystopic novel „Brave New World“ as a drug, prescribed to each member of a happy and steady society. No one is supposed to be pensive, careworn or saddened in it. The spirits must be high and the public must be content and well-functioning. Valio Tchenkov, who is an ardent follower of Huxley’s “philosophy”, shares that in his life scenario he regularly takes his dose of “Soma” on his own prescription and discretion in his studio on the fifth floor at 31 Hamsa Street in Munich. And it is through the solo exhibition at Sarieva Gallery that the artist provides an opportunity for art lovers to take a little of his “Soma” and to discern their own reflections in the typical for the artist funny, bizarre, fantastic and unusual characters that exist between the art in the studio and what we call reality – the world outside.

This November Collectors’ Forum is returning with a lecture by Frédéric de Goldschmidt! His collection consists mostly of works by emerging artists in dialogue with pieces from historical movements in the 1960s and 70s.
Frédéric will share with the Bulgarian audience advice on building a collection, curating art and the ethics and knowledge behind those processes.

Melania Toma about Cabin UTROBA:
“Cabin Utroba” is an interactive installation exploring the bowels of the proto-Bulgarian mysticism through the eyes of a transient. The project originated with the disquisition of ancestral symbology through hallowed caves, holy stones and magic tools created by mankind. The research took place in various locations such as Karadjov Kamak, Utroba Cave, Dupchen Kamak and various abandoned villages. After collecting several “treasures” from the past, comes the process of connecting them all together in a contemporary environment. The gallery will become a place of transformation and rebirth; a sanctuary dedicated to the Wombof – the Great Goddess of Fertility.”

7 artists present their curatorial visions in the gallery space of The Union of Bulgarian Artists.
Pravdoliub Ivanov’s exhibition „New Plovdiv Realism” showcases works by six young artists from Plovdiv. Sarieva / Gallery has been working closely with some of them, such as Dimitar Shopov, Martina Vacheva, Mitch Brezounek, Valko Chobanov and Velizar Dimchev. All of them participated in the “BACKGROUND: Young Artists from Plovdiv” project.
About the artwork: Valko Chobanov
Valko Chobanov’s work was part of the BACKGROUND: YOUNG ARTISTS FROM PLOVDIV group show, organized by Sariev Contemporary (currently Sarieva Gallery) in 2019. The following text, written by the artist, was featured in the exhibition brochure:
I: am from Plovdiv, yes, but I no longer consider myself young. From a young age, I had the dream of joining Club 27, but unfortunately I am not a musician and was forced to focus on the visual arts. This year I turned 28, so now I have a new deadline – up to 35. Van Gogh was 35 when he cut his ear, and in honor of this, to this day it is considered the age limit at which you move from a young artist to an established artist. I hope that in 10 years there will be a „Background: Established artists from Plovdiv“.
WE: There‘s nothing to talk about, we‘re number one, let‘s not argue, we‘re number one.
YOU: have a chance to see the art of young Plovdiv artists; we are supposed to be the last generation of artists to have free time to paint. In the future, as the ocean level rises, people will either mutate and have gills like Kevin Costner in the Waterworld and live at the foot of the hills where they spend their days fighting for territorial supremacy with radioactive catfish and carp. Or else they will live on the tops of the hills, where there will be no free time to paint because of the constant attacks and raids of the seagulls. So you have one last chance to see this art at peace.

The design duo’s mission is to focus the public’s attention on natural processes transforming matter into an aesthetic suitable for interior space. For better process control, the studio is experimenting with integrating aging or now forgotten craft techniques.

This month we present to you the video documentation from the curatorial project FUTURE UNFORGETTABLE: Phase II On Vacation with this video focused on the artistic communities in Varna. The section Video channel on Open Art Files aims to document, preserve and present a series of events, programs, discussions and stories for which the video archive media is most appropriate, namely live public meetings and those in a virtual online environment.
