Creating bridges – art in public space
Lecture by Daria de Beauvais, Senior Curator, Palais de Tokyo
19 March 2019, 6 pm
French Institute, 3 Slaveykov sq., Sofia
Free admission
The lecture will be in French with Bulgarian translation
The lecture is realized within the framework of the initiative Sariev+Markov sculpture projects.
Art in public space is a tradition rooted in France, especially in the Francilian landscape. Different kinds of interventions over the past 30 years will be discussed, whether ephemeral or permanent commissions, democratic or activist gestures. This lecture will take as starting point historical examples such as the wrapping of the Pont Neuf by Christo (1985) and the columns of Daniel Buren in the Palais Royal courtyard of honor (1986). It will focus on the “artistic 1%” (created in the 1950s) but also on recent developments, such as the invention of the Nuit Blanche in the early 2000s – more precisely its 2016 edition, curated by the Palais de Tokyo – the “1 building, 1 work” program, or the artistic commands in the Greater Paris area.
