Luchezar Boyadjiev at the National Gallery / Kvadrat 500, Sofia

Luchezar Boyadjiev
On Vacation... (Corpus Equidae, 2004–2024)
National Gallery / Kvadrat 500, Sofia
7 July – 7 October 2025
Curators: Ovül Durmuşoğlu and Joanna Warsza

The exhibition presents Luchezar Boyadjiev’s large-scale cycle dedicated to equestrian monuments – emblems of power and historical memory, but also silent witnesses of violence and oblivion. Over the course of two decades, the artist has digitally removed the human figures from photographs of monuments in Bulgaria and around the world, leaving only the horses – mute yet eloquent witnesses of history.

At Kvadrat 500, 329 prints are on display, selected from over 500 works based on original photographs by the artist, images contributed by colleagues and friends, as well as open-source archives (Creative Commons/Wikipedia).

On Vacation… is an exhibition about monuments that fall or are protected, about lives that “matter,” and about horses that prove to be more enduring witnesses than the heroes once carried on their backs.

The exhibition is realized with the support of: Gaudenz B. Ruf, Sarieva/Gallery Plovdiv, Sofia, Singer–Zahariev Foundation, Boyana Sokolova, Iskra Blagoeva, Pancho Georgiev, Daniel Nenchev, Institute of Contemporary Art – Sofia.
