Vlad Nancă (b. 1979) lives and works in Bucharest.
His early works employ political and cultural symbols, often using word-play to evoke nostalgia, referencing Romania and Eastern Europe’s recent history and challenging the social and political climate of their time. His current interests revolve around space (from architecture and public space to outer space) materialising in sculptures, objects and installations. In his practice, he is fascinated by the plasticity of architectural intentions, in the raw shapes that exist before they materialize in built form. By extracting meaning out of dominant as well as peripheral design and architectural narratives from the 20th century, Vlad Nancă is preoccupied with how these movements reverberate throughout contemporary objects and ideologies.
His recent solo exhibitions include: Vis-a-Vis, Suprainfinit Gallery, Bucharest (2019); The City and the City, KVOST – Kunstverein Ost, Berlin (2019); In the Natural Landscape the Human Is an Intruder, Sabot Gallery, Cluj-Napoca (2018).
